HOP Faculty Serves as Chair-elect of American Society of Nutrition’s Obesity Section
Michelle Cardel, Ph.D., R.D., assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy, has begun a three-year term as chair-elect for the American Society of Nutrition’s Obesity Research Interest Section. The Obesity Research Interest Section is one of 15 research interest groups within the American Society of Nutrition (ASN), a leading professional organization for researchers, clinical nutritionists and industry professionals working in the field of nutrition science. More than 5,000 members strong, the American Society of Nutrition (ASN) hosts an annual research conference and publishes the world’s highest ranked peer-reviewed journal in nutrition and dietetics, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Members of the Obesity Research Interest Section focus on research, teaching, and outreach activities in the area of obesity. The group plans symposia, mini-symposia, and controversy sessions at scientific meetings such as Experimental Biology, which are open to all ASN members. Andrew W. Brown, Ph.D., a staff scientist with the Office of Energetics and Nutrition Obesity Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, currently chairs the ASN’s Obesity Research Interest Section. Cardel will chair the group when Brown’s term ends in June 2018.
“It’s such an honor to have been selected by my peers to serve as chair-elect of this prestigious group,” she said.
