Walker to Give Oral Presentation at Upcoming American Diabetes Association Conference

Ashby Walker, Ph.D., will give an oral presentation, “Type 1 Diabetes through Two Lenses: Comparing Adolescent and Parental Perspectives with Photovoice,” at the American Diabetes Association annual conference in early June. The 15-minute oral presentation will cover Walker’s photo project, which chronicles both parents’ and children’s perspectives on living with Type 1 Diabetes, with Henry J. Rohrs, M.D., assistant professor of pediatric endocrinology; Desmond A. Schatz, M.D., the medical director of the UF Diabetes Institute; Janet Silverstein, M.D., the division chief of pediatric endocrinology at UF; Kathryn Parker, R.D., L.D./N., the program manager for the Diabetes Self Management Education and Nutrition Therapy Center; Shannon Lyles, BSN, RN, CDE, a registered nurse specialist; and Cathryn Johnson, Ph.D., professor of sociology at Emory University.

“It is an honor to have this venue to share the wisdom and perspectives of the youth and parents who participated in the UF Diabetes Photo Project,” said Walker, who is the lead author on this project and a research assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy. “In the first phase of the research, we examined youth photos and narratives and discovered links between demographic variables, like gender and socioeconomic status, and patterns of depiction related to resilience [findings forthcoming in Diabetes Spectrum this month]. In the second phase of the study, to be presented this June at the annual ADA meeting, we compare youth perspectives with parental perspectives to better elucidate their experiences with Type 1 diabetes.”
