UF Diabetes Expert Speaks at a National Continuing Education Conference

Ashby Walker, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes and Policy, spoke about her research on juvenile diabetes at a national conference, entitled A Collaborative Approach to Diabetes Care III: Reducing Readmissions & Costs While Exceeding in Patient Care Across the Healthcare Continuum, for nurse educators and physicians in Tampa, Fla., on Oct. 25.

“I was honored to be a speaker at this event alongside peers representing a range of clinical and academic settings in diabetes care” said Walker, who often collaborates with researchers at the University of Florida Diabetes Institute. In fact, Walker was featured in the October issue of the University of Florida Diabetes Institute’s newsletter and is collaborating with Desmond Schatz, M.D., Mike Haller, M.D., and Henry Rohrs, M.D., of the UF Diabetes Institute, along with several other faculty members from the Department of Health Outcomes and Policy, on a newly funded pediatric research project entitled “Reducing Health Disparities in Pediatric Diabetes.”

At the conference, which was the third in a series of seminars, Walker discussed the results of a recent UF photo research project, in which children with Type 1 diabetes were prompted to take and explain five pictures that captured what diabetes meant to them. The photos and explanations provide valuable perspectives and highlight the differences in disease experiences based on gender and socioeconomic status.

This seminar builds upon Walker’s body of work in diabetes research, as she is also the lead author of a manuscript articulating the link between diabetes and food nutrition, which can be found here.
